I.D.G.A.F.O.S. – Dillon Francis

I Dont Give A Fuck Or Shit.

What a heroic name for a song. Dillon Francis totally rocks my socks, and this song feels like he’s making the step up to become a festival headliner. It’s got all the elements of the various genres he dabbles in, a bit of moombahton/dubstep/electro/pure-undiluted-awesomeness. Plus, I’m not exactly sure why but to me the melody instantly gets me thinking about Irish leprechauns.

The point is: the song is huge, it reaches for the stars and then slams down a psychotic bassgasm.

Moonlight Sonata (Sound Remedy Remix) – Beethoven

My first thought as this song settled into my head: “this would be such a good song to listen to when blazed.” Sound Remedy has injected a dose of tension, light drums, and a few mild basslines into one of Beethoven’s most popular works. This is gorgeous, mellow dubstep of the best kind: it only complements the track, and it leaves the structure and original melody unaffected. The best thing about it is that there is no token “drop” moment – while the song does have some build-up sequences, the release is gentle and mesmerizing.

Basically: Get blazed. Listen to this song.

The M Machine

You may remember the song “Trafalgar” that I raved about early in the summer. Well even though we still don’t know who they are, The M Machine is back with some fucking sick new music.

The first two are just like “Trafalgar,” intense and breathtaking electro. The kind of electro that would actually make your heart stop in the middle of a party (and then restart with a bang).

Listen to this song from the beginning! This is not a traditional build-up, it’s like it gets you to the edge of a waterfall without you realizing it, and before you know what’s happened you’re thrown off the edge with the rush of a trillion tons of water flowing around your head.

This remix is the first production they’ve ever done, releasing it over 8 months ago. Still, I can confidently say that it has been overlooked for too long and this quality of electro should be revered. A bit on the hardcore side so skip on to the next one if you’ve got a faint heart.

If those two tracks are the perfect fit for a raving night of heavy ecstasy and cocaine usage, then “Glow” is exactly what you’d need to hear when you wake up the next day. A gentle, percussive track with the hook “I feel young again” quickly settling in the part of my brain that makes me sing out song lyrics at random times of the day.

Maria Rose & The Swiss Kicks

In their debut album New Direction, Flint, MI-based band Maria Rose & The Swiss Kicks have shown an equal measure of promise and unfulfilled potential. The eclectic mix of genres and sounds range from pop and indie rock to soul, and even a bit of jazz at times. It’s an ambitious venture that I appreciate for steering clear of generic indie rock or pop music, but the flipside is that the album sounds schizophrenic, more of a mash-up than a coherent collection.

But don’t let me put you off, because the strengths of the album lie in Maria Rose’s captivating voice. Capable of swinging between gentle highs and heartfelt choruses, her mercurial and energetic presence pulls you through. There are several spots in the album when it all ties together: for example, in “Pineapple Wine,” the songwriting, structural unity, and production work together to perfectly frame the song to match the vibrancy of Rose’s voice, and the result leaves you impatient for a second album.

Forgot – Reinvention feat. Florence + The Machine

Philadelphia-based duo Reinvention have a lot of similarities to Chiddy Bang, specializing in taking indie samples and working in a beat and a catchy hip-hop flow. This track samples the Florence + The Machine B-side “Swimming.” While Reinvention is still unknown, but this shows they’ve got the level of talent to make it big.
