Mash-ups

Kap Slap

Kap Slap have provided us with some great remixes over the years, combining our favourite mainstream songs into fantastic remakes. I think you’ll really enjoy these two samples, especially ‘better than a stereo dream’ which has a great song twist half way in.

Constantinople Train (Razzmatazz Mix)

I’m super-excited to show you this quirky mash-up track from Razzmatazz. And I don’t mean Zooey-Deschanel-quirky. I mean actually strange and interesting and delightful.

“Take The K Train” by Blunt Instrument is used as a slow glitchy backdrop beat for the main attraction: an old 1950′s tune called “Istanbul” by The Four Lads. What absolutely amazes me is how these two songs, representative of musical eras half a century apart, mix so seamlessly and so perfectly that I couldn’t imagine hearing them separately. I guess we have Razzmatazz to thank for that.

Sing it with me now: “Istanbul was Constantinople, now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople…”

Otto Knows

This kid is hailed as being Avicii’s prodigy. How can you pass that up?

Mouthful of Phantogram

I don’t know what it is about Phantogram that makes their songs perfect for mixing with hip-hop verses, but thankfully several artists have noticed and taken advantage of their beautiful indietronica (is that a real word yet?) in these mash-ups.

This first one is from The Hood Internet, long-known as mash-up masters. They add Wiz Khalifa’s “Roll Up” to “Don’t Move”, and it comes out with a super-mellow happy vibe.

Next up, this one’s exactly what it sounds like – “Mouthful of Diamonds” vs “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”. Brought to you by wait what, the same mash-up genius behind The Notorious xx album.

Now this one isn’t strictly speaking a mash-up. Azad Right, who is my favorite rapper of the moment (if you want to know why, listen to this, and this), released this track about two weeks ago. He uses “When I’m Small” by Phantogram as the backing track.

Bonus Remix:
Sexy, energetic and very danceable – this remix by The Jackals is freaking perfect.

The Notorious xx

This is the reason I didn’t listen to any new music in February. For me, new music is like food. I enjoy the taste, digest it, and then poof I forget about it and move on to the next meal.

So you can imagine just what it means for me to be obsessed with a single album for a whole month. Looking at my iTunes “Recently Added” gave me some guilty feelings, but whatever. This mash-up album by wait what is one of the most brilliant musical inventions of 2010 (I’m a little bit late on this one).

The xx’s debut album in its entirety, each song graced with the Big Poppa himself. Makes me realize that one of my biggest reasons for not fully appreciating rap is the musical production.

Madeon – Pop Culture

17 year old Madeon has been making great remixes for a while, but until I saw this video – I had no idea what a talented individual he was.

This song is a super-mashup of just under 40 songs, yet the song doesn’t sound overcrowded. Instead each sample is used just enough that it is recognisable to produce a new sound.
