I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. I fell in love with both Gotye and Myndset earlier in the fall, and just a few days ago Myndset announced on his Facebook that he was working on a remix of “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Considering that I rather enjoyed singing aloud to that song at the top of my lungs for a few weeks straight, I can only imagine that this is going to spark another few weeks of awkward public singing. Go listen to the original if you haven’t heard it before.
And that’s saying nothing of Myndset’s remixing skills. It’s remarkable how he keeps the original song intact, not just musically and structurally, but also preserving the emotional rawness of Gotye and Kimbra’s vocals. In fact, the heavier bass and accompanying synths convey an even more substantial affect to the song, but now it’s also fit for a dancefloor (especially a dancefloor filled with indie-music lovers). The result is similar to how the Whole-Z remix of Edward Sharpe’s “Home” brought an incredibly danceable feeling to a folk rock song.

P.S. I can’t believe how fast Myndset is cranking out awesome remixes. The guy is an animal! (or a robot, who knows whats under that mask?)

And the final weekend update: here’s all the hot electro and vocal house that’s been hitting the world recently. An especially cool new track is Tiesto’s remix of the Mission Impossible theme in anticipation of the MI4 movie. Wish it would be included in the actual movie, though it’s probably too late at this point. First off though, are the vocal house tracks:
Vocal House
Kaskade has always been known for collaborating with the best female vocalists, but he’s not exactly known for bringing in much bass or high-energy electro to his works. So this Deniz Koyu remix turns this into the perfect party/club song. Also, Rebecca & Fiona are gonna be huge – it’s just a matter of time.

More in the way of pop/electro with female vocalists. The original was a bit too girly-sweet for most people, but this DJ Kue remix adds the bass and electro riffs needed to keep the guys from standing awkwardly at the edge of the dancefloor.

One of the standout anthems of the summer gets remixed by Paris FZ & Simo T. More build-up, more pleasure.

Σ-Fly is our newest downtempo favorite, with a lowkey style to rival that of James Blake. For those of you not familiar with the Greek alphabet, that’s pronounced Sigmafly. Real name: Tom Holmes from Manchester, UK. He’s from the same label, Warminal Records, as the recently featured Essáy.
The Tetrachrome EP is a wondrous collection, contemplative and melancholy. I imagine myself sinking into a leather armchair near a fireplace, glass of scotch in hand, as the faint hi-hats and beats set the stage for a Descartes-inspired inquiry into an existence proof of consciousness.

The music video to my personal favorite song of this year, “Foreign Language” by Flight Facilities. It’s just how I imagine the song in my head, full of Mediterranean vibes and supermodels.
If you don’t know the song yet (shocking!) then you’ve got to listen to it and some of Flight Facilities’ other works.

A Bristol, U.K. based musician, Stumbleine has produced perhaps the most enchantingly numbing EPs that I’ve ever heard. The range of musical expression particularly stands out. Some songs are characterized by a slow, deep beat and distant, almost fuzzy vocals, while others have a more ambient, melodic style that rely heavily on keyboards and synths to set the daydreamy atmosphere.
I especially want to show you this one song titled “Ember,” released a month ago through SoundCloud and Bandcamp as part of the four-track Rose Tinted EP.

DJ Romo
A moody and minimalistic house track from Seattle’s DJ Romo. Taking inspiration from Paul Kalkbrenner, “London Bridges” sets a contemplative atmosphere, slowly morphing and unfolding multiple layers over the course of five minutes. Several themes and melodies are introduced throughout the track, ebbing and flowing with the energy of the song. Such a welcome relief from the abundance of dancefloor house music.
