Polaris At Noon

Without a doubt, Polaris At Noon is my favorite artist right now. You may remember his remix of Kimbra’s “Settle Down” that we posted just a few weeks ago. We got a ton of feedback and enthusiasm about that remix, and so I’m pretty damn sure you’ll love to hear more from Polaris At Noon (real name: Jason Suwito).

First up, this remix of “High Priestess” by Active Child is an unbelievably rich and mesmerizing tune. The original song is brilliantly sparse, with the vocals rising above music’s typical shallowness. But once Suwito adds his arsenal of slow heavy drums, synths, and various other electronic sounds, the track becomes a transcendent, meditative journey. “High Priestess” indeed – that’s probably the target audience.

Suwito proves he has versatility with this remix of KO KO’s “Float”. Unlike the calmness of “High Priestess” or the bubbly vigor of “Settle Down,” this track is an indie song at heart with a groovy bassline on top. Very catch stuff, and very likely to get stuck on repeat this summer.

You shouldn’t stop there. There are several more great remixes and originals on Polaris At Noon’s SoundCloud’s page. Have fun.

New Muse for the 2012 Olympics

Yesterday was the official release date for Muse’s new song ‘Survival’ which will be the theme for the London 2012 Olympics. In recognition of this, I’ve thrown on the song, as well as a few Muse classics. They truly are one of the greatest rock bands of our generation, and I think this new song shows it.

What Does a DJ Do?

I think given about 1 hour of instruction, anyone with minimal knowledge of ableton and music tech in general could DO what im doing at a deadmau5 concert. Just like i think ANY DJ in the WORLD who can match a beat can do what “ANYONE else” (not going to mention any names) is doing on their EDM stages too.

- deadmau5

My idea of what a DJ actually does has radically changed every year for the last five years. At first, I thought that live remixing and playing around with music was an integral part of a DJ’s performance. Then I actually started to go clubbing, and I saw how most of the DJ’s time was occupied clapping his hands, saying stupid stuff like “You guys are the best! I love this city!”, and then disappearing for a few minutes to flip through huge CD collections.

Well sure, but keeping everything beatmatched is kinda hard. And he’s making all those cool transitions and mash-ups and effects, right?”

Wrong! More likely, he pre-recorded the song with those added effects, and just used another artist’s existing mash-up, and just made the whole two-hour mix a couple of weeks ago and has been using it ever since. And no one actually beatmatches by ear anymore. It’s a waste of time. Computers do it better, so why bother?

Band of Horses Remix

Check out this great remix of ‘The Funeral’ by Band of Horses, it’s pretty heavy on the dubstep, but manages to maintain the songs initial integrity.
