The recording alias of San Francisco-based musician Scott Hansen, Tycho has recently released a mellow album titled Dive that’s been getting attention from the likes of Pitchfork and even the BBC. It’s like the soundtrack to a daydream, and can leave you lost in bliss for hours on end. Composed primarily of synths and acoustic guitars, it’s a mellow vibe that draws from his musical influences like Belle and Sebastian, Boards of Canada and Deerhunter.

Yet another display of Collin McLoughlin’s talent – it’s strange to hear an artist using just a simple combination of an acoustic guitar and vocals, and yet have it sound so fresh at the same time. The slow but deep kick-drum rhythm on the Easy Does It remix moves the song into addictive territory. This is off the Stark Perspective Remixes EP; you should check out both the remixes EP and the original if you’re interested in McLoughlin’s sound.

17 year old Madeon has been making great remixes for a while, but until I saw this video – I had no idea what a talented individual he was.
This song is a super-mashup of just under 40 songs, yet the song doesn’t sound overcrowded. Instead each sample is used just enough that it is recognisable to produce a new sound.

Composed of mostly covers, such as the “Skinny Love” cover that propelled her to fame, the Birdy album is a promising debut for the 15-year old Jasmine van den Bogaerde. Her voice is angelic and immensely soft, and for the most part accompanied solely by her playing the piano. The one track that she wrote herself, “Without A Word,” shows that she’s got more to offer than just a pretty voice. But even on covers like “Shelter” or “People Help The People,” she forges her own passionate and minimal take, ensuring that the album doesn’t play out like a rehash of other artist’s works. There are no single low points in the album, but I imagine that we won’t really hear Birdy’s own artistic voice until she writes an entire album, with a central unifying vision and all original songs.
Poised to be the latest in a line of UK pop/folk artists to be universally remixed, Birdy still has a lot of space to grow and develop her musical talent and songwriting, but this album is a sweet and poignant marker in her young career.
